Since adding up card values is the basic skill used when playing blackjack, it’s important to know the breakdown of values per card in the game. There’s no problem about associating a value to the numbered cards (two to ten) since their amounts are already imprinted. Regarding face cards (jacks, queens, and kings), every single one of them is valued at ten. The ace card, however, is versatile since it can have a value of one or 11. But its versatility is directed by which number is appropriate in making the best total when you add up your blackjack card values. And here’s how the term “soft” and “hard” totals are coined when the ace is in play. Say you get an initial ace-nine deal. That alone makes a good soft total of 20. The term “soft” means that if you decide to hit or draw another card, there’ll be little to no risk of busting. For illustration’s sake, suppose you decide to hit on this soft 20 and you get two or higher. That’ll render a hard total since the best way to value the ace, from that point on, is at one so that you wouldn’t go over 21. But if the previous hit reduces the ace’s value to one, it’s coined a hard total in blackjack.

The new Senate gaming proposal has the same terms as last year’s version. It would give the Seminole tribe the right to offer the game of blackjack at four of its seven gaming facilities, including the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood and the Coconut Creek Casino in exchange for at least $150 million annually. But the Senate placed a language in the new proposal that states that the “governor is not allowed to negotiate or implement a gaming compact that has any provision that is not consistent or differs with the terms for a gaming compact set in this bill”. When the Florida legislature set the conditions for a Seminole gambling agreement last May 2009 without that extra language, Governor Charlie Crist and the Seminole tribe promptly gave the deal a makeover. For example, Gov. Charlie Crist’s proposal gave the Seminole tribe the opportunity to offer blackjack at all seven of its gaming facilities and blocked the tribe’s gaming competitors, jai-alai frontons and pari-mutuel facilities from offering casino games for twenty years. That plan was dismissed by the legislature. Senator Dennis Jones (R-Seminole), the chairman of the Regulated Industries Committee, which handles gambling in the state, said that Gov. Crist and the tribe basically made a lot of changes in the legislation that they have created. He said that as far as he knows, they do not have the right to change it. For the first time, the Seminole tribe’s representatives and top Florida legislators have been holding talks in Tallahassee. Rep. Bill Galvano (R-Bradenton), the main man in the House on gaming issues, said on March 7th, 2010 that the talks are showing some progress. The tribe’s attorney, Barry Richard, said on Saturday that he is not worried about the new Senate gaming legislation, which he said could change if the two sides reach an agreement. The Senate Bill will get a hearing on March 10th, 2010 in Tallahassee but not a decision. The Senate legislation also includes changes to help the pari-mutuel industry in the state. Pari-mutuel facilities in South Florida, which offers voter-approved slot machines, would receive a tax break. Poker rooms across Florida could also host no-limit poker games with expanded gaming hours. Basics of Blackjack
In a game of Blackjack, there are usually five to seven players on the blackjack table. A blackjack dealer is also present to distribute the cards and play against the other players. The blackjack table is where the games are played. It can be kidney shaped but in most casinos, blackjack tables are semi-circle. Each blackjack player is seated on different circles along the blackjack table. When the blackjack player sits on the table, chips must be bought from the blackjack dealer before the game can proceed. The blackjack player can only place his wager on his space on his semi-circle. Only bets inside the betting circle are counted. To win, the player must be close to a total of 21 (add the values of the cards) and have a value of the cards higher than that of the dealer. Face cards are worth ten points and the others follow their numerical values. Aces are worth either one or eleven, at the decision of the player. To have a “blackjack”, the player must have a total of 21 in the first two cards dealt. A bonus is usually given in circumstances when a player receives a Blackjack and the player gets paid immediately. But if the dealer also has a Blackjack, no one gets paid. If you are confident about your cards, a mid-game increasing of bets is allowed in Blackjack. This is called a double down. A double down happens when you bet the same amount that you did in the first bet. Most casinos allow this provided you agree to receive one more card. Telling the dealer you want to double down is achieved by sliding a second bet beside your original bet. Never rest your second bet on top of the original one as this insinuates cheating by increasing your original bet illegally. The Blackjack dealer will give you an additional card. Wait until all cards are laid before you open your last card. If you win, you will be paid for the two bets. Splitting is another way of increasing your bet mid-game in Blackjack, but unlike in double down, you only get paid for a single bet. Splitting only happens if the player is dealt with pair cards like nine diamond and nine clubs. In this case, you can then split your cards to give you 2 separate cards to play and another bet alongside the second card. The original bet goes with the first card and the second bet goes to the second card. In Blackjack, a pair is split by pointing at them (if dealt face up) and saying “split”. If dealt face down, turn them up and put them apart on the table. After splitting, the dealer will give cards to your first card and wait for you to decide to stand. The dealer will not deal cards for your second hand until you decide to stand on the first card. Whichever sets of card is closest to 21 wins the pot. Splitting rules vary in one casino to another so better ask your dealer of the casino policy if you’re unsure.
